EBSQ Blogger of the Week: Jacqueline Kinsey

Artist Jacqueline Kinsey

Who and where are you?

My name is Jacqueline Kinsey and I moved to South Western Ontario, Canada, 3 years ago. I set up a studio in our home on the ranch which I share with my husband. The studio is currently upstairs in our 108 year old home over looking lush green horse pastures, the Big Otter Creek valley, ponds and historical outbuildings on the family farm.

I have really lead a varied life in my 40 + years. I grew up in the beautiful South Okanagan Valley in British Columbia (straight A student in art class, winning international art contests in Arizona at the age of 15 years), then attending Art School in Vancouver which brought about the opportunity of a lifetime to study art in Europe for a full term. Studying the art of the world’s greatest painters and sculptors greatly influenced me as a young student. I then went on to complete a Diploma of Fine Arts and returned to the Okanagan Valley to help with the family business, running a Dairy Queen for almost 5 years.

Although I had this great opportunity, passion, and talent for art, my interests took an unexpected turn into the area of law enforcement. For almost 20 years, I was a Constable with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I always kept up with my drawing throughout my police career and I am elated to be able to pursue my love of art full time now.
Recently, I retired due to an injury suffered while on duty. I have re-launched my passion for art and began painting again 4 years ago. Within the past 3 years I can now say that my drawings and paintings are collected across North America and around the world, including Hong Kong and Australia thanks to the World Wide Web!

Three Amigos by Jacqueline Kinsey
How did you get started art blogging?

I started out just wanting to share my life and art with my family and friends back in British Columbia. I did not know anyone except my husband and his parents here in Ontario. It allowed me to keep connected with friends and family over the past 3 years and has now developed into sharing my art and life with the world!

Small Miracles by Jacqueline Kinsey
Any tips for other EBSQ art bloggers?

The only tips I can give is to keep your blog relative to your art but at the same time, I believe you have to share a bit about yourself. I know its kind of scary for some of us, but I am of the belief that we all share the same experiences and can relate to one another and connect if we are willing to put ourselves out there a bit. I see some art bloggers that just post a painting and title on a regular basis. I find that I personally don’t feel that I want to re-visit those blogs as much as those that tell stories about their life and their art. I have found that the deeper I go, talking about my feelings and about my life experiences, the more comments I hear from people because they are able to relate to me and my experiences in their own lives. Its how we can connect to others.

Late Sun by Jacqueline Kinsey
What’s your musical inspiration of choice when you’re working in your studio?

I listen to “Galaxy The Light” satellite channel while I paint. I enjoy inspirational and spiritual music most. I also try to remember to pray before I begin each piece. I have noticed a significant difference in my work when I take the time to invite God in to collaborate with and guide me in the creating process. There is just something miraculous about it.

Winter by Jacqueline Kinsey
What’s coming next from your easel?

I am currently working on more equine paintings. I have two drawn out with graphite in great detail. When I use this technique, I like to use thin washes of acrylic to start with. I allow the graphite to become part of the painting. I will then apply thin layers of color and glaze and will finish with further details in oil to define areas where needed. After these are complete, I am planning on a series of local landscapes done in an abstract acrylic style.

EBSQ Blogger of the Week: Stephanie Allison

Artist Stephanie Allison

Who and where are you?

Stephanie Allison. I currently live just outside Shelbyville, Kentucky, with my husband, 4 dogs and 2 cats. I am originally from Fulton, New York. I have had a love for painting and photography since childhood. I used to walk through the neighborhood with my little Brownie camera, taking pictures of my friends playing—or I’d sit on the front porch drawing anything that interested me. I’ve always been fascinated by faces, which is why I mainly focus on portraits now. People or animals—faces show so much and I just love painting them.

The Music Maker by Stephanie Allison

How did you get started art blogging?

I started looking for new ways to market my work, and read quite a bit about the importance of the Internet. I actually began using a blog as a journal, but kept it private. Then I took an art marketing class, and the instructor again stressed the value of the Internet—and how putting my thoughts and work processes out in public would not only help promote my art, but might also help other artists in similar situations. Living in a small town, the art market is also small—and a blog helps me connect. People visit my site, maybe make comments about my work, or commiserate about issues all artists face: where and how to market, what to do when you’re stuck and/or out of ideas, etc. And I try to reciprocate by visiting their blogs, if they have one, or their websites.

Denise by Stephanie Allison

Any tips for other EBSQ art bloggers?

My advice is to try to put something new on your blog at least once a week. Don’t be afraid to share your ups and downs with the creative process—it helps to know other artists struggle with the same issues, whether technical or personal, and I’m always interested in seeing what others are doing. It helps keep me motivated. Visit other art blogs, leave comments, ask them to visit you, exchange links—if you find a site that’s interesting, or offers advice on a particular art process or technique, post it on your blog. Blogging is a great way to connect with other artists and make new art friends!

Guitarra de Baile (Dancing Guitar) by Stephanie Allison

What’s your musical inspiration of choice when you’re working in your studio?

I love all kinds of music—jazz, country, classical—so what I listen to often depends on my mood, and/or what I’m interested in painting. One time I was jamming to Jimmy Buffet’s “Desperation Samba (Halloween in Tijuana)”, and ended up painting “Guitarra de Baile –Dancing Guitar”. I also have a little plastic 2-headed monster toy on my drawing table that I call my “inner critic”—when I start getting too fussy, or critical of what I’m painting, I can pull off one of the heads, and sort of change personalities…..is that too weird??

The Potter's Hands by Stephanie Allison

What can we expect to see next from your studio?

As far as painting goes, I’d like to continue a series I started a few years ago, “Working Hands.” We do so much with our hands, so I’d like to show hands doing all sorts of things: playing music, making pottery, digging in soil, etc. I’ve already completed two: “The Potter’s Hands” and “The Music Maker” – both have sold, which is a good thing, but now I’ve got to start the series again. I’ve also begun to make jewelry—so maybe I’ll paint my own hands!

EBSQ Blogger of the Week: Cindy Couling

Cindy Couling Art Brain

Who and where are you?

I’m Cindy Couling. I’m an artist and graphic designer from Sunnyvale, CA. By day I run my own design shop and I illustrate commercially now and then. By night (and whenever I can fit it in) I do art for myself. I’m Canadian born, fell in love on the internet with a wonderful American man who married me and changed my world. I play around with any art medium that catches me eye. I do ceramics for awhile, then paint and journal, then do a little of whatever craft that’s interesting to me that week and come full circle back to ceramics. I think I am a little A-D-D when it comes to art. I love every aspect of art and want to try everything.

Skulls by Cindy Couling

How did you get started art blogging?

I’ve never been a good writer. I find it really hard to express myself with words alone. I loved the idea of blogging, but wasn’t excited about writing. Instead of writing, I decided to post a visual journal and let my art tell my stories. Over the years I’ve become more vocal and more confident in my writing.

Peace on Earth by Cindy Couling

Any tips for other EBSQ art bloggers?

Don’t be worried about being a good writer. Let your art speak for you. Post what appeals to you, not what you think the viewers want to see. Be your true self.

Namaste by Cindy Couling

What’s your musical inspiration of choice when you’re working in your studio?

I love all kinds of music, but I love good, cheesy 70′s and 80′s music. Listening to ‘Car Wash’ or ‘Bennie and the Jets’ takes me back to being a kid again, playing and not giving a sh*t about what other people think. I also love letting my ipod decide what I want to hear based on a single song choice. (I’m amazed at how smart the ‘genius’ function is.) Technology blows me away. (I’m such a nerd in soooo many ways. lol.)

Be Yourself by Cindy Couling

What can we expect to see next from your studio?

Who knows! (…and I like ‘not knowing’!) Right now I am working on ceramics again, but my art journal is calling to me again.

EBSQ Blogger of the Week: Debbie Lincoln

Artist Debbier Grayson Lincoln

Who and where are you?

I am Debbie Grayson Lincoln and I live in the unincorporated community of Morgan Mill, Texas – about 45 miles South West of Ft Worth – “Cow Town”! I am surrounded by incredible horse breeders and real cowboys – many who still make their living ONLY from working with horses and/or cattle. There are a bunch of wannabe cowboys, too, but I get my best images from the real ones – those with the scruffy boots, the un-clipped horses wearing saddles that haven’t squeaked in years and tack softened from hard use, not oil. My neighbors know to call me when a calf working is scheduled – my track and camera are ready at a moment’s notice.

Battle Scars by Debbie Grayson Lincoln
How did you get started art blogging?

I really, really wanted to get into the DailyPainters.com website/art sales site, and to do so an artist first had to show a commitment to, first, painting every day; second, FINISHING a painting every day; and third showing consistent quality of work. EEK! My husband and I sold our business in 2006 and I knew I finally had my chance to paint full time – it was now or never – so I jumped and never looked back.

Experienced Rider Only by Debbie Grayson Lincoln
Any tips for other EBSQ art bloggers?

Blogging not only attracts attention (we artists HAVE to learn how to blow our own horns) but it also lets your potential buyers/collectors into your world. They can see why you create what you create and get a chance to make a connection with you. That is an essential element in sharing your art. We have to get connected. Blogging is risky, though – it can make you vulnerable, and often my husband chastises me for things I include in my blog (political rants, for instance). But it’s ME! You don’t have to read about me – close the blog. I will still be me, though.

Party Begins Now by Debbie Grayson Lincoln
What’s your musical inspiration of choice when you’re working in the studio?

Music in the studio is hard to listen to, because I love to dance and that’s hard to do with a paintbrush in your hand! I love rock and roll from the 60′s, but in the studio my radio is tuned to an XM station that pays old time radio story classics from the 40′s and 50′s – like “Lights Out”, “Gunsmoke”, “The Whistler”, “The Jack Benny Show”, etc. I already know many by heart now, but I still enjoy listening to them.

They Are Not Dancing Yet by Debbie Grayson Lincoln
What’s coming next from your easel?

Horses in motion are getting my attention right now. Bucking ones with and without cowboys, running, jumping, fighting – both realistic and impressionistic. It’s hard for me to stay in one particular style – some days I want to finish a painting and walk away; others I enjoy carefully plotting, crafting layers, making plans and taking weeks to finish. Must be a hormonal thing!
