EBSQ Facebook Artist of the Week: Nico Niemi

Who and where are you?

My name is Nicole Marie Winkelman, but I still use the nickname Nico and my maiden name Niemi for my artwork. I have loved creating artwork for as long as I can remember. My mother is an artist as well and was a source of inspiration for me from a young age. I’ve traveled the country but always reside in Wisconsin, and currently live in Waukesha.

How were you introduced to Facebook?

I joined Facebook to keep in touch with distant friends and relatives who already used it. After exploring other art pages I realized how easy it is to create one, I made one for myself.

Any tips for other artists starting a Facebook Page?

Invite your friends to your page when you first start out, let anyone else who is interested in your artwork know you have the page, and post artwork as often as you can. People love pictures! Have information about where to find your artwork if they’d like to own some, and how to contact you. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t always get the ‘likes’ you’re looking for-getting going can take a little time.

What’s your favorite Facebook Page feature?

My favorite feature would have to be sharing. When people share your artwork it broadens your reach and brings so many more people in-some who might never have looked for your artwork in the first place. Facebook makes your art so easy to find for anyone who has it, and makes interaction with anyone who is interested easy as well. I really like just about all the features it has.

What’s coming next from your studio?

All sorts of things! There will be fantasy creatures, and brilliant colors, some holiday items, but definitely more cat-themed artwork. I have a new kitten in my home and he is a source of inspiration I literally can’t ignore.

See more of Nico’s art and follow her here:

EBSQ 1:1 with Dawn Hough Sebaugh

Who and where are you?

I was born in North Carolina and currently live in the San Diego, California area. I received a BA in Marketing from Pfeiffer College in North Carolina and a Degree in Color and Design from Parson’s School of Design in New York and also attended fine arts programs at Denver University in Colorado. I have been painting organic abstracts for over 30 years. My muse is PASSION…using Color and Texture. I paint in both acrylic and oil. I also believe in giving back so I donate paintings to numerous charities.

How did you become involved in the RAWards?

I actually got an email from the director of Raw Artists (who had seen my painting on line) asking if I would participate in their next show. I looked at the venue and thought “wow…I’ll be displaying my work on a 12 foot long chain link fence. I’ve never done that…how cool! ”. I also love the fact that Raw Artists supports the art, music, fashion, and entertainment community!

What happens if you win and how can fans vote for you?

The semi-final event is Friday November 16th at 7:00 until 12:00 am at 4th and B St San Diego. This is a LIVE VOTE event so you must attend to vote. I really hope if you are in the area you will stop by and VOTE!

There are some great prizes!

Write up in Arts N Fashion Magazine, write up in the Upchuck Magazine, Print package from Impact Visual Arts, Gift Card from Visual Shop, Placement at an Artist Show at Graffiti Beach, Photo Studio time at Industry Showroom, Placement on Gallery Wall at Industry Showroom, Placement at the San Diego Indie Fest 2013, Placement at an Atre Fresca, Winners interview from Charles Thi, and a Placement at a RAW: San Diego Show 2012 plus even more perks!

When the awards are over, what’s next for you?

That’s a hard one! If I would be lucky enough to win…”Look Out! The skies the limit!” I will of course continue to create and sell my paintings at shows, galleries and on-line. I believe I will start helping to mentor more young artists and get them involved in the San Diego art culture.

Thanks to all who have supported my art and to all of you who can attend this event and hopefully vote for me!

The Yellow Daisy Festival with Patti Ballard

September 2012 marked the 44th annual Yellow Daisy Festival in Stone Mountain Park, Ga. The festival is named for the Confederate Yellow Daisy that grows on the granite outcroppings of Stone Mountain. Every year it features more than 400 artists and crafters from all over the country. In all the time I’ve lived in Georgia, I have never been to the Yellow Daisy Festival. I’m not a native to Georgia, but for many years the festival was only a ten minute drive away! While I don’t live so close to Stone Mountain now, I decided it was about time I experienced the arts, crafts, food and live music of this wonderful event.

I discovered soon after planning my trip that former EBSQ artist Patti Ballard, of PBS Art Studios, was going to be there selling her whimsical paintings. What a treat! If you ever have a chance to see an artists work beyond the monitor do not hesitate. Nothing compares. Patti’s paintings are like a piece of childhood wrapped with magical daydreams. Browsing her booth was serene and calming.

Patti was kind enough to chat with me a bit before the next wave of visitors hit her booth. Here’s our mini-interview:

AM: How long have you been coming to the Yellow Daisy Festival? And what made you choose this festival?

PB: This was my first year at this festival. I was recommended by a fellow artist who has been doing the show for a long time.

AM: How far in advance to you begin preparing for an art festival?

PB: I usually have shows 1 or two weeks apart so when I am not at a show I am making more art and preparing for shows.

AM: What do you like most about participating in art festivals?

PB: I love meeting new people and seeing all the art. I always find something interesting. And it’s always fun to see other artists I have become friends with at other shows.

AM: Do you have any upcoming festivals? And if so, where?

PB: I have a show scheduled almost every week starting in October. My next show on October 6-7 will be in Melbourne Fl. Only 45 minutes from home… If you like You can see the rest of my art show schedule on my website…mostly all are in Florida!

EBSQ Facebook Artist of the Week: Craig Gourley

Who and where are you?

Hello my name is Craig Gourley and I live in Darlington Co Durham a small town in the north east of England. I’ve been painting and drawing since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I studied art and graphic design at New College Durham and Darlington Tec College.

How were you introduced to Facebook?

I was introduced to Facebook by an old school friend looking to catch up but I soon realized its potential as a promotional tool for my artwork.

Any tips for other artists starting a Facebook Page?

Try to update your page as often as possible, this will help you get more fans coming back to your page.
Promotion is important as well, I find Twitter is a good tool for this, following the right sort of people and tweeting your fan page every now and then will send people who are interested in your art to your page and hitting the LIKE button.

What’s your favorite Facebook Page feature?

I have a few, the link feature is a great tool, being able to pop a link in your status bar and have a thumbnail picture come up is really helpful. The SHARE tool is also fantastic plus the ability to link your Twitter and YouTube accounts together is really time-saving.

What’s coming next from your studio?

More ArtRage digital paintings and maybe some water colour artwork :) I’m still working hard on my commissions for hand painted pop-art canvases plus an E bay shop may be on the horizon.

EBSQ Blogger of the Week: Jacqueline Kinsey

Artist Jacqueline Kinsey

Who and where are you?

My name is Jacqueline Kinsey and I moved to South Western Ontario, Canada, 3 years ago. I set up a studio in our home on the ranch which I share with my husband. The studio is currently upstairs in our 108 year old home over looking lush green horse pastures, the Big Otter Creek valley, ponds and historical outbuildings on the family farm.

I have really lead a varied life in my 40 + years. I grew up in the beautiful South Okanagan Valley in British Columbia (straight A student in art class, winning international art contests in Arizona at the age of 15 years), then attending Art School in Vancouver which brought about the opportunity of a lifetime to study art in Europe for a full term. Studying the art of the world’s greatest painters and sculptors greatly influenced me as a young student. I then went on to complete a Diploma of Fine Arts and returned to the Okanagan Valley to help with the family business, running a Dairy Queen for almost 5 years.

Although I had this great opportunity, passion, and talent for art, my interests took an unexpected turn into the area of law enforcement. For almost 20 years, I was a Constable with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I always kept up with my drawing throughout my police career and I am elated to be able to pursue my love of art full time now.
Recently, I retired due to an injury suffered while on duty. I have re-launched my passion for art and began painting again 4 years ago. Within the past 3 years I can now say that my drawings and paintings are collected across North America and around the world, including Hong Kong and Australia thanks to the World Wide Web!

Three Amigos by Jacqueline Kinsey
How did you get started art blogging?

I started out just wanting to share my life and art with my family and friends back in British Columbia. I did not know anyone except my husband and his parents here in Ontario. It allowed me to keep connected with friends and family over the past 3 years and has now developed into sharing my art and life with the world!

Small Miracles by Jacqueline Kinsey
Any tips for other EBSQ art bloggers?

The only tips I can give is to keep your blog relative to your art but at the same time, I believe you have to share a bit about yourself. I know its kind of scary for some of us, but I am of the belief that we all share the same experiences and can relate to one another and connect if we are willing to put ourselves out there a bit. I see some art bloggers that just post a painting and title on a regular basis. I find that I personally don’t feel that I want to re-visit those blogs as much as those that tell stories about their life and their art. I have found that the deeper I go, talking about my feelings and about my life experiences, the more comments I hear from people because they are able to relate to me and my experiences in their own lives. Its how we can connect to others.

Late Sun by Jacqueline Kinsey
What’s your musical inspiration of choice when you’re working in your studio?

I listen to “Galaxy The Light” satellite channel while I paint. I enjoy inspirational and spiritual music most. I also try to remember to pray before I begin each piece. I have noticed a significant difference in my work when I take the time to invite God in to collaborate with and guide me in the creating process. There is just something miraculous about it.

Winter by Jacqueline Kinsey
What’s coming next from your easel?

I am currently working on more equine paintings. I have two drawn out with graphite in great detail. When I use this technique, I like to use thin washes of acrylic to start with. I allow the graphite to become part of the painting. I will then apply thin layers of color and glaze and will finish with further details in oil to define areas where needed. After these are complete, I am planning on a series of local landscapes done in an abstract acrylic style.

Thank you Jacqueline for being an EBSQ Blogger of the Week!

If you are an EBSQ Artist and would like to be considered for Blogger of the Week just add us to your blogroll. I’m searching EBSQ profiles weekly for links to artist’s blogs. If you aren’t an EBSQ Artist, what are you waiting for?
