This month’s featured gallery is Artistic Nudes. The nude is a classic subject for artists and is of endless fascination and challenge. There are many types of nudes, in all degrees of undress and all manner of poses. Some are intended to make a statement, some are part of a story and some are just a celebration of the human form.

Woman Laying On Red Pillow - Melissa Tobia

I find drawing nudes to be one of the hardest tests of skill as an artist. When I draw a nude, it tests my technique, my sight, and my ability to bring out the subject’s personality. A nude drawing shows the subject’s vulnerabilities, their soul, their character and personality and also how the artist views them. Every human being has a story that we can all connect to, and the artist must be able to show that story. It is important to me as an artist to be able to capture the intensity of emotions and feelings of the subject as it is to capture the subject’s likeness. There is such a beauty in the human form and its anatomy; more so, when you can also see and feel the vulnerabilities that all human beings share. – Melissa Tobia

Poison Ivy - Kelli Ann Dubay

What draws me the most to painting nudes is that they remain timeless and classical.  The viewer doesn’t get caught up in clothing, which dates a painting.    I believe that fabric provides too much visual information for the viewer, with its texture and sheen.  I prefer to just be right there emotionally with my nudes as opposed to create obstacles for the viewer to mentally get over with way too much information  With the model being fully exposed, there are so many emotions that you can create with a nude, fear, abuse, confidence, vulnerability – etc. without worrying about how the subject is dressed and how their apparel  falls on their body. – Kelli Ann Dubay

How long have you been creating?

I have been creating since age 3. Professionally since 22.

What’s your media of choice?

Acrylics on canvas, mixed media for illustrations and vector for design.

What, besides your art, brings you creative fulfillment?

Photography, reading novels outside my own interests, attending small concerts, writing, educating myself through the arts and philosophies, travel.

What are your motivations for creating?

I think I have a form of ADD/ADHD and OCD that forces me to create. I have compulsive energy and creating something helps calm that down. Really!

Lisa Miller is the winner of Simon Sez… Red! Muriel Areno – Simon for last week’s Simon Sez, asked for red because “Today is a gloomy day, so I thought I’d pick a color for the Simon challenge.” Out of the many entries, she chose Lisa’s photograph. Muriel said of Lisa’s red barn “Lisa’s photo has such a dreamy feeling, and it is both hot and cold. You captured the essence of a barn. Just a wonderful image.”

Sleeping Nude - Nancy Denommee

I have been painting and drawing nudes off and on for most of my adult life.  I love the lines of the female (and sometimes male) figure, the pen just seems to flow and swoop over the paper.  I love the curves, the dips and bumps and shadows.  I do paint landscapes, crows and cats but I always come back “home” to the nude figure.  It seems to be where I truly belong. – Nancy Denommee

Renie’s art is surreal, colorful, and full of whimsy! Her bright vivid colors and fluid shapes just make you want to smile.  This artwork definately will bring new life to a drab dark wall! Her Etsy store is full of original works and prints of masterpieces past.
